Jesús Reina - violin
Jesús began playing the violin with his grandfather, José Reina, in the field of folk music, and his talent soon caught the attention of renowned maestros. At age 8, he was invited to study with Yehudi Menuhin and Natasha Boyarskaya at the Yehudi Menuhin School. At age 10, he enrolled at the Reina Sofía School under the tutelage of José Luis García Asensio. Two years later, he received a scholarship to Indiana University to study with Mauricio Fuks, and at age 15, he enrolled at the Manhattan School of Music in New York as a student of Patinka Kopec and Pinchas Zukerman.
He has performed in major venues such as Wigmore Hall and the Royal Festival Hall in London, Carnegie Hall in New York, the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the National Auditorium in Madrid, and the Palau de la Música in Barcelona. He has also appeared at international festivals such as the Miami Piano Festival and Music@Menlo in California. He has also appeared in some of the most important Spanish festivals, including the Zaragoza Auditorium, the Escorial Festival, the Musika-Música Festival in Bilbao, and the Alicante Concert Society.
Among the orchestras with which he has shared the stage are the Mariinsky Theatre Philharmonic Orchestra, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Baja California Orchestra, the Yucatán Symphony Orchestra, the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, the Malaga Philharmonic, the Murcia Symphony Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra of the Principality of Asturias, invited by conductors such as Valery Gergiev, Pinchas Zukerman, Manuel Hernández Silva, Virginia Martínez, Juan Carlos Lomónaco, Sebastian Hamman, Eiji Oue and Ari Rasilainen.
His enthusiasm for chamber music has led him to join forces with other musicians such as violinist Guy Braunstein, violist Paul Neubauer, pianists Judith Jáuregui and Josu de Solaun, and cellists Øyvind Gimse, Amanda Forsyth, and Kyril Slotnikov.
Recent appearances include invitations from the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra, the Córdoba Orchestra, and the Principality of Asturias Symphony Orchestra, with whom he performed at the Princess of Asturias Awards, paying tribute to the laureates Ennio Morricone and John Williams. He also participated in the Valencia Philharmonic Society and the San Sebastián Musical Fortnight, in a recital that was warmly received by audiences and critics. Upcoming engagements include the Getxo chamber music season, the 15th anniversary concert of the Camerata Gala, the Málaga Philharmonic chamber music season, and the recording of Bruch and Mendelssohn concertos with the Malta Philharmonic and conductor Oliver Díaz for the Aria Classics label.
A restless artist with an entrepreneurial spirit, Jesús returned to settle in his hometown and co-found the Málaga Clásica Festival with violinist Anna Nilsen. As co-artistic director, it has just celebrated its ninth edition, bringing together some of the finest international musicians in chamber music events. He is also co-founder of the Galamian Academy, a center for advanced musical specialization. His work and commitment to the city have earned him the Málaga Medal of Honor and the Puerta de Andalucía Award, a recognition given to individuals, organizations, and institutions that highlight Andalusian values around the world.
He appears weekly on Canal Sur's hit television show, "Tierra de Talento," hosted by comedian Manu Sánchez. In addition to serving as a judge on the show, he has also collaborated with leading artists from various musical genres, such as José Mercé, María Villalón, Mariola Cantarero, India Martínez, Pasión Vega, El Kanka, and Ale Romero.
